Lesson 11: Some Mountains of the Bible

Lesson written by Murray Wade

Using your Bible, answer the questions below about some of the mountains we find mentioned in the Bible.

1. There are four mountains mentioned in the area of Jerusalem. One is Mount Calvary or the Hill of Calvary, where Jesus was crucified and another is Mount Moriah where Soloman built the temple. Please name the other two.

2. Mount Calvary was really only a small hill, about 14 feet high. From reading verses from the four gospels (Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, Luke 23:33, and John 19:17) and your own observations, tell in your own words what this hill of Calvary means to you.

3a. What region is mentioned in the story of Abraham planning to sacrifice Isaac (2 Chronicles 3:1, Genesis 22:1-19, and Hebrews 11:8-19)?

3b. Please make a list of the similarities of the attempted sacrifice of Isaac with the death of Jesus.

4. Mount Taber (mentioned in Judges 4) is thought to be the mountain of an important event recorded in Matthew 17:1-13. What was that event and who were those present?

5. Mount Sinai is mentioned in many places in the Bible. Please read Exodus 3:1, 17:6, 19:18-25, 31:18, 33:6, Leviticus 7:38, Nehemiah 9:10-21, Psalm 68:8, Malachi 4:4, Acts 7:30-42, Galatians 4:24-26.

A. From these readings, what is another name used for the area of Mount Sinai?

B. In your own words, why is Mount Sinai so important?

6a. What region of Mountains did the Ark land upon? Please list verse.

6b. What country is that mountain in today?

7. How is Mount Herman used in Psalm 89:12 and 133:3?

8a. What great contest occurred on Mount Carmel as recorded in 1 Kings 18:19-46?

B. What did Jesus do when He went to the Mount of Olives?

10. Mount Zion has both an earthly meaning and a spiritual meaning. From these verses

(2 Kings 19:31, Psalm 48:2, 125:1-2, Isaiah 8:18 and 37:32, Joel 2:32, Micah 4:7, Hebrews 12:22, and Revelation 14:1), please determine the earthly and spiritual meaning of Mount Zion.
